By now, you probably know that the internet has a big place in the lives of most people, but what about Macy’s, which offers an even bigger outlet for shopping on the go?
The company has an online store called Macy’s Online Shopping, which lets you browse its vast inventory of merchandise and other goods from over 150 countries.
In an interview with Mashable, CEO Scott Forstall said the company sees an opportunity in the internet-savvy population.
“We’re going to take advantage of that demographic in ways that we’ve never done before,” he said.
“And the reason we’re doing that is because of the fact that we know a lot about how to build a sustainable business on the internet.”
He said Macy’s is targeting customers who are in their late teens and early 20s, and the online store is the company’s “first-ever retail store that’s fully designed to support a younger audience,” with the aim of reaching them in ways not possible through brick-and-mortar stores.
Forstall has said that Macy’s has been a leader in the online retail space, having launched its first store in 2012 and has been expanding its footprint ever since.
The online store has expanded its online store to include apparel, electronics, jewelry, cosmetics, and home goods.
Forstall told Mashable that Macy is looking at how it can reach the same demographic of consumers who are now purchasing products online, such as millennials.
Macy is planning to open about 1,000 stores over the next three years, Forstall told the publication.
“I think it’s a very interesting business for us to be a part of,” he added.
“I think there are a lot more opportunities for us in the marketplace than just the one we’re in right now.”
Forstall said that the Macy’s Online Store is not a standalone product, but part of Macy’s “Macy Online Shopping” initiative, which aims to create a new retail space that can be a “hub” for online commerce.
The store will be fully staffed by more than 1,200 people, and will be based at the company headquarters in Manhattan, where it will host sales events, for example, and offer a variety of events.
We’re planning on adding other retail spaces over the years, like the online marketplace, and it will be a hub for online retailers in the future,” Forstall added.
